Terra Nova Expeditions x Polar Collective: Turning Exploration into Citizen Science
At Terra Nova Expeditions, we believe travelling to Antarctica should mean more than witnessing one of the world’s most extraordinary environments. It should also create opportunities to understand it better, contribute to its protection and return home with a deeper sense of responsibility for its future.
That belief sits at the heart of our EARTH Sustainability Programme, the framework that guides the way we operate, choose our partners and support science throughout our expeditions. In particular, our commitments to Healthy Oceans, Action for Climate and Education for Exploration recognise the important role expedition travel can play in supporting research and creating more informed polar travellers.
That is why we are proud to work with Polar Collective, officially the Polar Citizen Science Collective.
The Polar Collective is a non-profit network bringing together scientists, polar guides, expedition operators and travellers to support citizen science across the Arctic and Antarctic. By using expedition vessels already travelling through these remote regions, citizen science programmes can help researchers gather observations and environmental data from places that are otherwise difficult, expensive and sometimes impossible to monitor consistently.
Travellers becoming active participants
One of the most powerful aspects of citizen science is that it changes the relationship between traveller and destination.
Rather than simply observing Antarctica, guests can gain a better understanding of the systems that shape it: from wildlife and ocean health to broader environmental and climatic change. Working alongside expedition guides and scientific programmes gives travellers the opportunity to see how observations collected in the field can contribute to a much larger body of knowledge.
This closely reflects Terra Nova’s Education for Exploration principle. We believe that education is one of the strongest tools available for protecting the polar regions. Our onboard programme combines expert-led lectures, practical learning and citizen science opportunities designed to turn curiosity into understanding — and understanding into long-term stewardship.
Supporting science in hard-to-reach places
Antarctica remains one of the most challenging environments on Earth in which to undertake scientific research. Distance, weather, ice and logistics all place significant limitations on when and where researchers can collect data.
Expedition vessels therefore have an unusual opportunity to contribute.
Through cooperation with organisations such as Polar Collective, voyages can become platforms for observation and data collection while continuing to operate responsibly within the Antarctic environment.
This aligns directly with the Healthy Oceans pillar of our EARTH Programme, through which Terra Nova supports citizen science and marine research while maintaining strict environmental and biosecurity standards. It also supports our commitment to Action for Climate, recognising the importance of ongoing monitoring and better scientific understanding of rapidly changing polar environments.
