Why We Chose Terra Nova Adventurer

When we set out to find the right vessel for Terra Nova Expeditions, our priority was never simply to find a ship that could carry guests to Antarctica.

We wanted a vessel that could deliver the kind of small-ship expedition experience we believe the Southern Ocean deserves — intimate, capable, comfortable and genuinely focused on exploration.

That search led us to Terra Nova Adventurer.

Formerly operated as the G Expedition, the vessel has a long history of expedition cruising and is ideally suited to exploring Antarctica, the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands and Patagonia.

For Terra Nova Expeditions, she represents an exciting next chapter as we continue building a different kind of Antarctic adventure.

A True Small-Ship Expedition Vessel

Size matters in Antarctica.

Terra Nova Adventurer carries fewer than 100 expedition guests, creating a much more personal experience than the large ships increasingly found in the region.

With fewer passengers, expedition days feel less like a conventional cruise and more like a genuine adventure. There is more time to spend exploring, getting off the ship and experiencing the environment around you.

For us, that's exactly what small-ship Antarctic cruising should be.

Designed for Expedition Travel

Terra Nova Adventurer isn't simply a passenger ship adapted for expedition cruising. Her history and design are rooted in expedition travel.

Her ice-class capability provides an important additional level of confidence when operating in polar waters, while her retractable stabilisers help improve comfort during ocean passages and challenging conditions.

That combination is important when you're operating in some of the most remote and changeable waters on the planet.

Antarctica doesn't always deliver calm seas and predictable weather. An expedition vessel needs to be capable of handling the journey as well as providing a comfortable base once you arrive.

A Ship That's Getting Even Better

While Terra Nova Adventurer has a proven expedition pedigree, we're not simply putting our name on an existing ship and calling it a day.

We're investing in her.

The vessel is undergoing a programme of cabin upgrades and improvements, designed to make the onboard experience more comfortable while retaining the character and practicality that make a small expedition ship special.

We've also added two features that we're particularly excited about:

A New Jacuzzi

After a day exploring Antarctica, there are few better places to relax than outside with the Southern Ocean stretching away around you.

Terra Nova Adventurer now features a newly fitted jacuzzi, giving guests a perfect place to unwind, share stories and take in the scenery after a day ashore.

A New Sauna

We've also added a new sauna onboard.

It's a small detail, but one that makes a surprisingly big difference after a cold Zodiac cruise, a hike through the snow or a day exploring Antarctica.

For us, expedition comfort isn't about turning the ship into a floating resort. It's about having the right comforts in the right places… and the views from this warm haven of goodness are made to be spectacular!

The Perfect Size for Antarctica

One of the biggest advantages of Terra Nova Adventurer is her size.

A smaller expedition ship allows us to create a more intimate atmosphere onboard while retaining the facilities and stability needed for longer Southern Ocean voyages.

It also means that guests aren't simply watching Antarctica from a balcony.

Our expeditions are designed around getting off the ship and into the environment.

Zodiac landings, wildlife encounters, photography, hiking and other expedition activities are at the heart of the experience.

More Than an Antarctic Cruise

At Terra Nova Expeditions, we use the word expedition deliberately.

Our voyages aren't simply about ticking Antarctica off a bucket list.

They're about learning, exploring and being part of the environment.

That's why our expeditions include opportunities for:

Wildlife encounters
Get close to penguins, seals, seabirds and whales in some of the world's most extraordinary wildlife habitats.

Zodiac exploration
Explore coastlines, bays and landing sites that larger ships simply cannot access.

Hiking and exploration
Get away from the ship and experience the landscapes on foot.

Photography
The Southern Ocean is one of the world's greatest destinations for wildlife and landscape photography.

Citizen science and education
Learn about the ecosystems, history and science of Antarctica from our expedition team.

Expedition Heritage

The vessel's previous life as the G Expedition means she is already familiar to generations of expedition travellers.

That history matters.

Rather than starting with a conventional cruise ship and trying to turn it into an expedition vessel, Terra Nova Adventurer has been shaped by years of expedition operations.

We're now bringing that heritage into the Terra Nova Expeditions approach — with our own focus on small-group adventure, education, sustainability and exceptional expedition experiences.

Why Not a Bigger Ship?

Because bigger isn't necessarily better in Antarctica.

Large ships can offer more restaurants, theatres and entertainment.

But that's not what we're trying to create.

We want guests to wake up and wonder:

“Where are we going today?”

Maybe it's a remote beach covered in penguins.

Maybe it's a Zodiac cruise through ice.

Maybe it's a landing beneath towering mountains.

Maybe it's simply standing on deck watching a pod of whales pass the ship.

The ship is the platform.

The destination is the experience.

Our New Home for Antarctic Adventures

Terra Nova Adventurer gives us the opportunity to continue developing the type of expedition travel we believe in.

Small ship.
Fewer guests.
More time exploring.
Exceptional wildlife.
Remote destinations.
A capable polar vessel.
And the comforts that matter when you come back onboard.

From the Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctica to the Falkland Islands and Patagonia, Terra Nova Adventurer will be at the centre of our upcoming expedition programme.

We chose her because she gives us the right balance of expedition capability, ice-class credentials, intimacy, comfort and adventure.

And, ultimately, that's what Terra Nova Expeditions is all about.

Go further. Explore deeper. Leave only footprints.

The ship’s journey of reinvention continues under Terra Nova’s stewardship. With the owners we have modified her to include a dedicated science lab and operational space, enabling onboard research and real-time data collection in the Southern Ocean. We're proud to partner with scientific institutions from around the world, offering berths for young researchers and emerging scientists to gain real-world field experience. This isn’t just a passenger voyage—it’s a platform for knowledge, discovery, and impact. And we’re only just getting started.
